Saturday
Author: Ian McEwan
My Mum gave me this for Christmas and I finished reading it tonight. It tells the story of a neurosurgeon in London on the day of the anti-Iraq protests in February 2003. When it was published last year the book swam in a sea of good reviews and predictions of Booker Prize glory until an Irish writer called John Banville trounced it in an American newspaper. Banville ended up winning the Booker Prize, which Ian McEwan wasn't even nominated for. Saturday is a great and very intelligent read. It's the only novel I've read by McEwan, and I have read that people who've read more of his work were slightly disappointed by Saturday, but that only makes me want to read more of his stuff.
